STONE DRAGGING BY OXEN
There are traditional sports that have been played in the Basque lands since time immemorial, many of which are specific and unique to this area.
Stone dragging contests take place on a specially prepared course known in Spanish as a probadero and in Basque as a probaleku, where participants must drag a large stone for a preset time. The winner is the contestant that completes the most laps or preset stages.
There are various forms, depending on how the stone is dragged, involving a combination of the strength of different animals and of human beings. In Elorrio contests were traditionally staged both in the town and in the rural hamlets. A stone used long ago in contests in the Olazti meadow can still be seen today.
The town’s old stone-dragging course stood on the street now called Elizburu Kalea. It was the first such course for which a permit was granted in Bizkaia. Nowadays stone-dragging is only staged during the town’s main festivities (Ferixa Nagusikoak), which take place over 10 days in early September. Contests are staged at weekends and on the last Monday of the festivities, on a course beside the Eleizalde football pitch.
