and the surrounding areas!
ELORRIO BLACK PUDDING
In Elorrio the Basque word buzkantza describes a large, heavy black pudding made with vegetables stuffed into a sausage skin. These puddings were made for home consumption and carried as gifts on visits to neighbours, who in turn gave visitors some of their own to take home. It is usually eaten sliced and fried.
On 9 December Elorrio holds its black pudding contest. Anyone visiting the town on that date has the chance to taste the top four candidates shortlisted by the jury and vote for their favourite.
This day also gives visitors an opportunity to see the inside of Elorrio’s gastronomic societies, known as txokos. For the rest of the year these societies are open only to members and their guests, so only a lucky few have the chance to visit them. Don’t miss it!
BLACK PUDDING CONTEST
6 December: black pudding contest.
Jury prize: best black pudding and three runners up.
People’s jury prize: the public have the chance to sample the final four (shortlisted for the prize by the specialist jury) at the town’s gastronomic societies (a different black pudding at each venue) and vote for their favourite.
But that is not all: there is also a contest for the best black-pudding based bar snack or pintxo that you can also take part in. Depending on how the holiday weekend falls this may last up to 3 days.
PINTXOBIRA: BLACK-PUDDING BASED PINTXO TOUR
6, 7, 8 December: black pudding pintxo tour for the bars and restaurants of Elorrio. Sampling takes place at the contesting establishments.
FAIR FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
8 December: craft and local product fair in the morning in the square.
